When Alan was first approached regarding his participation with Virtuoso™, besides his concern over finding the time he asked what sort of project would interest me. The question was answered by throwing it back at him. After all, considering that Alan has a thoroughly unique and identifiable pianistic style and approach I was confident that he could interpret most anything and present a first class effort. But still, I felt it important that he be comfortable with what he was to perform; that he should play from his own direction rather than mine. Thus, the title, "Labor of Love." But in all fairness the title also arises out of the material… being songs with at least this one thing in common: They all have the word "love" ensconced within their title. To no one's surprise what resulted is this marvelous collection of ballads and moderately up-tempo pieces that are worthy of being considered a master class in jazz piano technique. In other words, Alan is easy to listen to but the closer you choose to listen the more you're going to discover. Alan plays with intricacy, detail and precision. He can finesse, he can swing, he can dazzle with technical flourish but never for its own sake. It has to make sense, it has to fit. Alan, a native of New Zealand and an alumnus of Berklee College of Music, has worked as a pianist, an arranger, conductor and composer for a list of artists that includes Chet Baker, Johnny Mandel, Henry Mancini, Lee Ritenour, Scott Hamilton, Diana Krall and Natalie Cole. Over the years he has been the recipient of numerous Grammy™ awards and nominations. Whether Alan's recording is played simply to create just the appropriate ambiance or rather to the devout attention of the curious the more one listens the more amazing moments you'll find in his music.
